Malory Towers has come to London in a brand new adaptation currently showing at Alexandra Palace. Presented by the Emma Rice Company and adapted by Emma Rice, this production blends traditional play and musical elements.
Story and Setting
The story follows new student Darrell Rivers, played by Robyn Sinclair, as she navigates boarding school life in 1940s Cornwall. The play includes hijinks like an illicit swim with impressive puppetry, a Shakespeare production, and late-night bonding. Midnight feast boxes are available for purchase in the foyer.
High Stakes and Themes
Set in a post-WWII landscape, the production addresses grief, trauma, and bullying. A tense segment from the books sees two girls hanging off a cliff edge, prompting a daring rescue. While touching on debates about gender and race, the play does not fully delve into them with nuance.
Framing Device and Performances
A mostly unnecessary narrative framing starts proceedings in 2026 before flashing back to 1947, then hastily wraps up the 2026 plot. The cast is impressive, with actors doubling as musicians on piano, violin, drums, and guitar. Stephanie Hockley as Irene DuPont stands out, and Anna Soden’s stroppy Gwendolyn Lacey evokes both eye-rolling and sympathy. The set blends puppetry, animation, and physical props.
