Ludwig has returned for a second series on BBC One. The detective dramedy sees David Mitchell once again portray the titular character, a reclusive puzzle creator who assists detectives in solving inexplicable mysteries, while Anna Maxwell Martin returns as the wife of his missing brother, James.
What to expect from Ludwig and Lucy in series two
Mitchell told the BBC what viewers can anticipate from Ludwig and Lucy in series two, with the star revealing: "Their relationship is a bit warmer than it was. There's more trust in each other and their childhood closeness has returned. But there's also a lot of sniping. The phase when Lucy was just incredibly grateful to John for putting his own life on hold and doing this has passed. Now she's just frustrated by his timidity, his plodding approach, and his propensity to get distracted by murders."
How many episodes are in Ludwig season 2?
Ludwig season 2 is made up of six episodes airing weekly. The opening three episodes are already accessible to stream on BBC iPlayer, though only the first episode will be broadcast on BBC One tonight, August 20, at 9pm. Subsequently, the episodes will continue to air on BBC One weekly each Thursday, and will be uploaded to iPlayer accordingly.
The complete BBC One transmission schedule is as follows: Episode 1 on August 20, Episode 2 on August 27, Episode 3 on September 3, Episode 4 on September 10, Episode 5 on September 17, and Episode 6 on September 24. Season one consisted of six episodes as well.
Guest role and plot developments
Actor and comedian Stephen Merchant has a guest role in the upcoming season. At the beginning of season two, Ludwig has uncovered vital evidence concerning his brother's disappearance. However, there is a substantial amount of it, and while he is perfectly content to work through them methodically, Lucy feels a more pressing need for answers.
Mitchell explained: "John can't go into the police station very much, because there haven't been any murders for him to be called in as a consultant on, which frustrates Lucy. She thinks the answer to the mystery is more likely to lie there than in these sterile boxes. But then, fortunately for the show, if not for the fictional characters involved, a spate of murders begins."
Awards and viewership
The programme attracted nearly 10 million viewers within the first month of broadcast. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Ludwig holds a 97% approval rating and it garnered several prestigious award nominations, including a BAFTA for Scripted Comedy. Ludwig airs on BBC One on Thursdays at 9pm. The first three episodes are on BBC iPlayer.
