Kerry Katona Shines in Super Troupers ABBA Tribute
Kerry Katona has proven herself to be every bit the showgirl and a true Dancing Queen with her starring role in Super Troupers, the ABBA tribute currently storming around the UK. The 45-year-old star, who shot to fame as part of Atomic Kitten in the late 1990s, is now captivating audiences with her live performance alongside a group of West End professionals.
While Katona remains a regular on the Butlins and nightclub circuit, she is better known today as a media personality, with reality shows like I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here!, Dancing On Ice, and Celebrity Big Brother under her belt. However, her role in Super Troupers reminds fans of her pop star origins.
A Night to Remember at The Fire Station in Sunderland
Katona, who writes a weekly column for new! magazine, performed at The Fire Station in Sunderland. The show opened with a crowd-pleasing rendition of I Have A Dream, followed by Money Money Money. Katona made a dramatic entrance midway through the latter, introducing herself as Kerry "Car Crash" Katona, instantly winning over the audience.
The two-hour show featured hit after hit, with Katona taking the lead on Mamma Mia!, Dancing Queen, and Super Trouper. She channelled Meryl Streep's Donna Sheridan, singing about life in the spotlight. The performance was lighthearted, with Katona joking about her divorces and altering lyrics for laughs, encouraging the audience to join in with dance moves.
Memorable Performances and Highlights
Katona dedicated Does Your Mother Know to her partner Paolo Margaglione. Other classics included SOS, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight), and Voulez-Vous. The standout performance of the night came from Ella McCready, whose rendition of The Winner Takes It All drew almost never-ending applause.
The show culminated in an encore of Waterloo, more than 50 years after the song won the Eurovision Song Contest. Katona and the cast performed additional tracks from ABBA's back catalogue, leaving the audience with smiles on their faces.
A Fabulous Night Out
According to the reviewer, "I'd be surprised if anyone in that audience left without a smile on their face. Kerry and her Super Troupers gave everyone an ABBA-solutely fabulous night out." The show runs at various venues across the UK until 5 July.
