Ian McKellen Unites UK with Film Ahead of England World Cup Game

Sir Ian McKellen has fronted a powerful new film aimed at uniting the country, timed to coincide with England's next World Cup match against DR Congo. The 87-year-old actor, best known for his role in Lord of the Rings, collaborated with award-winning playwright James Graham to create a "love letter to England" that seeks to foster togetherness amid national divisions.

England's World Cup Journey

After topping their group, the Three Lions face DR Congo in their first knockout game at 5pm today in Atlanta. A victory would propel them into the last 16 alongside Paraguay, Brazil, and Canada. Fans, celebrities, and England WAGs have traveled to Atlanta for the match, with David Beckham, Stormzy, Tom Cruise, Ed Westwick, and Mumford and Sons spotted in the stands.

The Film and Its Message

In the emotional film, Sir Ian recites a monologue that challenges perceptions of English identity. He declares: "Who are ya? Who are ya? Who are ya? Goes the chant from the stands. Now, isn't that the question?" The script addresses criticisms of English character, asserting that despite claims of broken spirit or lack of passion, "we are the lions that roar" and "we know who we are at our best when we are together."

The initiative, launched in June, invites people across the UK to share their views on what it means to support England at a major tournament and what it means to belong to a nation. Participants can leave a 60-second voice note expressing their hopes for the country and their vision for the future.

Sir Ian's Long-Standing Football Support

Sir Ian has been a lifelong football fan and has previously backed the Football v Homophobia campaign, which aims to eradicate homophobia through education. In 2015, he praised the initiative, saying: "What a wonderful initiative it is. Sport is all about getting along with people – you ultimately cannot be a good team without that. You cannot succeed unless everyone is doing it together."
