A preview performance of Game of Thrones: The Mad King at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre was cancelled at 4pm on July 25, just hours before it was scheduled to begin. The decision sparked outrage among ticket holders who had made travel and accommodation arrangements.
Unforeseen Delays Cited
Theatre bosses stated that “a number of unforeseen delays” required “additional time” to bring the production to the public. A statement to ticketholders read: “The decision to cancel performances is always challenging and is only taken after careful consideration of all the options available. We recognise how disappointing this will be for audiences and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused. All audience members affected will be provided with a full and automatic refund including any fees paid.”
Social Media Fury
Fans voiced their anger on Reddit and other platforms. One ticket holder wrote: “Having booked hotels and paid for travel this is absolutely unacceptable.” Another added: “They are now offering us the chance to rebook, with 0 availability for the remaining run. What a f*****g joke.”
Remaining Schedule
All other preview performances except July 28 were cancelled. The RSC confirmed to What’s On Stage that the original opening night on August 8 will go ahead as planned. The run continues until September 5.
The stage production, adapted by playwright and director Duncan Macmillan from the Netflix TV series, explores Robert’s Rebellion and is set ten years before the show. Callum Woodhouse, known for All Creatures Great And Small, stars as Robert Baratheon.
