Mackenzie Boyd's (Lawrence Robb) simmering anger towards Ross Barton (Michael Parr) finally explodes in Emmerdale, putting his former best friend in mortal danger. The tension has been building since Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) revealed she slept with Ross and gave birth to his child, adding to the betrayal Mack feels over Ross keeping the truth about Leyla's parentage.
Mack's Betrayal and Anger
Mack's world shattered days ago when Charity confessed to the affair and disclosed she was blackmailed and raped by Doctor Todd (Caroline Harker). Despite the intense feelings of betrayal, Mack has chosen to support Charity through the police investigation. However, his anger towards Ross is harder to reconcile. 'Mack feels deeply betrayed by him,' Lawrence Robb explained. 'They were becoming close friends, so learning that Ross knew about Leyla feels like a big betrayal. While he might understand Charity's motivations better due to his love for her, the betrayal from Ross is harder to reconcile.'
Robb added that Mack is struggling to pretend everything is normal. 'I think there's a lot of anger directed towards Ross – not so much because of the infidelity but because of the reality of Leyla's biological parentage.'
Lured to the Barn
As a new week begins in the Dales, Mack's emotions boil over. He lures Ross to a barn on Emmerdale Farm under the pretense of needing help moving bags. Ross senses something is off, as the task seems unnecessary. Mack claims he just wanted an excuse to hang out, but the atmosphere is tense and awkward, making Ross uncomfortable.
This leads to a violent confrontation on the mezzanine of the barn. Mack shoves Ross hard, sending him falling to the floor below. Ross is left for dead, and the consequences remain to be seen.
What's Next?
With Ross potentially dead, the fallout will reverberate through the village. Meanwhile, Mack and Charity's marriage remains fragile. Robb noted, 'I think there's maybe an element of them sticking a band-aid over it. Mack doesn't really get much time to deal with it because he immediately enters protection mode. So, whether that rears its head further on down the line, I don't know.'
Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV at 7:30pm.
