Doctor Foster Final Series: Sherwood Star Joins Cast

The BBC has unveiled a first-look image from the third and final series of Doctor Foster, starring Suranne Jones. The critically acclaimed drama is making its return a decade after series two as the actress will reprise her iconic role as Gemma.

Suranne will star alongside returning cast members Bertie Carvel as Gemma's husband Simon and Tom Taylor as their son Tom. Thusitha Jayasundera will also reprise her role as Gemma's close friend Ros, while Anna Madeley returns as Lucy.

New Cast Members Join the Drama

In the newly released image, Jones is pictured at the head of a dinner table, gazing directly into the camera as her guests converse over food and drinks. A number of fresh faces have joined the cast, including Slow Horses star Dustin Demri-Burns, who takes on the role of Gemma's new partner Callum.

Plot Details for the Final Series

In series two, Gemma uncovered her husband's affair and sought revenge, though the devastating aftermath led to her 15-year-old son Tom going missing. In series three, she has found love again and is on the brink of getting married, but events from the past re-emerge and threaten her reputation.

Doctor Foster captivated audiences when it originally aired in 2015 and 2017, with the series two finale drawing nearly 10 million viewers. Suranne also collected a BAFTA for her outstanding lead performance as Gemma.

Suranne Jones on Her Return

She previously commented on her return to the series: "When I got the call to ask if I wanted to return as Gemma Foster, I knew the time was right. We needed space from the first two series, and we needed Tom – Gemma and Simon's runaway son – to return as an adult with questions."

"For me, this time around, it's about accountability and questioning – can we ever truly sever ties with our past and the damage or traumas that haunt us, so we can fully move forward? Gemma and Simon have so much to unpick!"

"It's been an exciting time working with the brilliant Mike Bartlett again, and the team at Drama Republic on the scripts and now I can't wait to start filming." Doctor Foster is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
