Shane Meadows' low-budget revenge thriller Dead Man's Shoes airs on Film4 tonight at 10.50pm, and fans say the dark narrative takes them "through every emotion." Despite its modest budget, the 2004 British drama leaves a lasting impression on audiences.
A dark and disturbing narrative
The film follows Richard, a man returning to Matlock, Derbyshire, after serving in the British Army. He sets out to exact vengeance on the gang of drug dealers who brutally mistreated his mentally impaired brother, Anthony. Richard terrorises each gang member through deeply unsettling methods, transforming into a merciless executioner. After dedicating himself entirely to revenge, he confronts the reality of what he has become and questions whether he can carry on living that way.
Shot over just three weeks in Matlock, the location is crucial to the story. One fan wrote on Rotten Tomatoes: "A grim and thoroughly engaging revenge thriller, I enjoyed it a great deal, especially the performances of Paddy Considine and Toby Kebbell. Obviously made on a low budget, the film proves that fine acting, a taut script and inventive direction can make up for funding limitations."

Paddy Considine leads as Richard, with Toby Kebbell in his debut film role, alongside Gary Stretch, Stuart Wolfenden and Neil Bell. One reviewer said: "Gritty. Harrowing. Gripping. Haunting. Considine's performance earned him Best British Actor at the 2005 Empire Awards, beating Simon Pegg for Shaun of the Dead and Daniel Craig for Layer Cake. The film also received nominations across eight categories at the British Independent Film Awards.
