Paramount's dystopian drama Curfew, starring Sarah Parish, is based on an incredible book. Adapted from Jayne Cowie's 2022 novel After Dark, the series plays out across six twist-filled episodes.
Plot and Setting
Set in a society where men must abide by a curfew to prevent crimes against women, the whodunnit drama takes a dark turn after a woman is murdered outside of a Women's Safety Centre. Industry's Sarah Parish stars as DI Pamela Green, tasked with tracking down a killer. Forced to partner with her new colleague Eddie (Mitchell Robertson), Pamela becomes convinced the killer is a man. But with all men tagged and monitored during curfew, how can she be sure it wasn't a woman?
Cast and Characters
Rounding out the cast, Parish and Robertson are joined by Mandip Gill, Alexandra Burke, Lucy Benjamin, Anita Dobson, and Amy Louise Pemberton.
Inspiration and Themes
Speaking about the show's exploration of violence against women, Parish told What to Watch: "The theme of this drama will certainly push buttons; some people will be very angry and it'll likely prompt some heated debate but that's what we need." She added: "I loved how it explores such a debate-heavy subject. Following the high-profile case of Sarah Everard, Baroness Jenny Jones said maybe we should consider a curfew for all men to keep women safe. Unsurprisingly, men were up in arms at the suggestion - but when police say women shouldn't go out after 7pm, nobody bats an eyelid. So, it's an interesting theme and Pamela was a joy to play."
Critical Reception
Hailed as "fascinating" and "cleverly written," fans have shared their thoughts on the series via IMDb. One viewer wrote: "Thought provoking from the angle of men's violence against women, yet the twisty murder mystery also allowed it to be quite entertaining at the same time. Of course Sarah Parrish and Mandip Gill were amazing, as usual!" Another added: "Lots of twists and turns that kept you thinking. The plot is good and different to what is usually the same thing just presented differently. Put it up there with some of Harlan Coben's series." A third noted: "From start to finish, the show gets you thinking. It's a dramatised adaptation of a fictional book, (emphasis on fiction) and very cleverly written." Describing Curfew as a "brilliant and gripping thriller," a fourth added: "I love a good drama thriller and Curfew does not disappoint. I binge watched the entire show. It twists, it turns. At times I was on the edge of my seat."
