Coronation Street star Sally Dynevor has opened up about her comic transformation as the iconic Sally Metcalfe, admitting that she often brings 'Sally-isms' into her real life. The 53-year-old actress, who has played the social-climbing character for 30 years, is relishing her new status as a source of soap comedy, particularly through her on-screen partnership with window cleaner Tim, played by Joe Duttine.
Dynevor’s character is set to become Weatherfield’s town councillor, with a wardrobe inspired by Theresa May. 'We’re taking her down the Theresa May route, kitten heels, quite smart. Because if there’s comedy, I want to do it, not the clothes,' she said. The actress recalled struggling to keep a straight face during scenes, especially when Joe Duttine delivered lines like 'Man eat meat,' leading to multiple takes.
Despite initial doubts about the pairing, Dynevor now enjoys working with Duttine, saying, 'You can’t put your finger on it, it just works. If I’m not in, I really miss him.' She also noted that Tim is actually the clever one in the relationship, while Sally is 'completely daft.'
Off-screen, Dynevor’s husband, also named Tim, is a scriptwriter for Emmerdale and often points out when she slips into character mode. 'Sometimes I do go into Sally mode, not meaning to, and Tim will say to me, “Oh my gosh, that was such a Sally-ism!”' she laughed.
The actress, who has three children, including actress Phoebe Dynevor, said she initially discouraged her daughter from acting due to industry rejection but supported her passion. Meanwhile, her son Sam has no interest in theatre and plans to study politics.
