Coronation Street has confirmed that Audrey Roberts has found herself a new love interest after months away from the screen. The beloved character, portrayed by Sue Nicholls, has been absent from the soap, residing in France with her daughter Gail (Helen Worth).
Audrey's New Romance Revealed
During Monday's (July 20) episode, the Platt family gathered to record a video message for Audrey's birthday. Harry Platt informed Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon): "We're doing a video for Granny Audrey, to show her new boyfriend." Bethany quipped back: "This new boyfriend, is he French and is he rich?" David (Jack P. Shepherd) retorted: "What do you think?"
Audrey, a soap icon since her first appearance in 1979, has had a turbulent romantic life on the cobbles. She married Alf Roberts (Bryan Mosley) in 1985, and after his death in 1999, she dated butcher Fred Elliott (John Savident) and became engaged to former con man Lewis Archer (Nigel Havers), who died suddenly in 2019.
Fans Worried by Absence
Audrey's recent absence from the soap caused considerable worry among fans. The character has been overseas in France alongside her daughter Gail. Monday's episode brought an update, revealing her new relationship.
Off-screen, Sue Nicholls had a secret singing career, releasing the song "Where Will You Be?" in 1968, which reached number 17 in the UK Music Charts. She also performed at a cabaret club in Vienna and appeared in The Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin and Rentaghost.
Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
