Corrie Pays Tribute to Director Kay Patrick

Coronation Street paid an on-screen tribute to former director Kay Patrick at the end of Tuesday's episode (June 30), following her death at age 84 earlier this month. The tribute featured a picture of Patrick with the words: "In memory of Kay Patrick 1941-2026."

Kay Patrick's Career on Coronation Street

Kay Patrick joined Coronation Street in 1994 and worked on the ITV soap for 21 years, directing over 250 episodes. Among her most notable work was the heartbreaking final episode of beloved character Hayley Cropper, played by Julie Hesmondhalgh, which aired in January 2014. In the episode, Hayley took her own life by drinking a lethal cocktail after living with terminal pancreatic cancer.

Julie Hesmondhalgh's Praise

Julie Hesmondhalgh previously praised Kay for her sensitive direction of those final scenes. In a past interview, she said: "The almost holy atmosphere she created in the studio during those last scenes… She instinctively knew that it was a one-take moment, and so just blocked it and shot it with such understated love and sensitivity. It’s entirely down to Kay that those scenes were as raw and memorable as they were."
