Coronation Street fans have been left confused by what they think is a 'change' to Adam Barlow's profession as they claim to have spotted an 'unrealistic' error. Those tuning in to the ITV soap this week have seen the solicitor defending Megan Walsh as her trial into the grooming of teenager Will Driscoll got underway.
Adam Barlow in Court: A Professional Shift?
As viewers are aware, Megan ended up on the cobbles herself after Will complained to his family about having to leave his athletics training behind, after his dad, Ben Driscoll, surprised his partner Eva Price by moving from Hull to the street to run the Rovers Return. But it was soon revealed to those watching that Will didn't want to leave Hull because he was actually in a secret relationship with his coach, with the pair going on to sleep together just as he turned 16 in the shocking grooming plot.
The truth was eventually exposed back in March when Sam Blakeman, who had sussed out what was going on and was being threatened by Megan into silence, ended up in hospital and eventually confessed what he knew to stepmother Leanne Battersby and her sister, Will's stepmother Eva. Megan, who found out she was pregnant before the truth was exposed and later claimed to have suffered a miscarriage, was getting away with her crimes as she and Will stuck to their story that Will had an out-of-control crush that Megan had struggled to shut down.
Will's Confession and the Trial
But Will has since finally told the police the truth about his and Megan's relationship, with DS Lisa Connor-Swain going on to charge Megan after questioning. Despite his statement, Megan denied any wrongdoing, and the case has now gone to trial. And it's fair to say the Driscolls have been less than impressed that Adam has been representing Megan in the case, especially given his uncle Daniel Osbourne's involvement, as he was in a relationship with Megan while she committed her crimes.
But it was as Megan took to the stand during Wednesday's (July 1) edition of the long-running show that fans became distracted by Adam's role and his involvement. @whyayemedia said: 'I didn’t know Adam Barlow was a barrister!' @clellandrea echoed: 'Since when did Adam become a barrister?!!' @nick.lewis08 asked: 'Would Adam really be allowed to be a barrister in a case involving his neighbours?' @anna00_xx commented: 'Have I missed a chapter here, since when was Adam a barrister?'
Fan Reactions: Unrealistic or Acceptable?
@drippyprecum1 questioned: 'Adam Barlow isnt a barrister so why is he wearing robes and a wig in court??? #corrie @itvcorrie.' @deirdrenolanjones complained: 'Such an unrealistic storyline. No way in the real world would a barrister be allowed to represent someone he knows, let alone go into the local boozer where the prosecutor's family run the pub!' But @supergran0606 added: '... No, Adam is not a Barrister but a solicitor who all of a sudden has become a solicitor advocate.'
According to the Law Society, solicitor advocates are solicitors who have obtained additional qualifications to appear in higher courts, including wearing wigs and gowns. This suggests Adam's role, while surprising to fans, may be within legal bounds. However, the proximity to the parties involved remains a point of contention among viewers.
