Ross Wilkes Identified as Tyrone Dobbs' Biological Father
In the latest episode of Coronation Street, the mysterious Ross Wilkes, played by Ian Burfield, was revealed to be the long-lost biological father of Tyrone Dobbs. Cassie Plummer, portrayed by Claire Sweeney, was left reeling after discovering his identity through his name on a bar bill.
Cassie's Panic at the Hotel
Cassie had been drinking heavily at the hotel following Steve McDonald's rejection of her marriage proposal. While intoxicated, she began flirting with Ross at the bar. However, as he prepared to leave, he turned hostile, mocking her drunkenness and calling her a "hooker." Cassie confronted him, but he continued his insults before departing. It was only when she saw his name on the bill that she realized his true identity.
How Ross's Arrival Came About
Ross's arrival was orchestrated by Tyrone's daughters, Hope and Ruby. Without Tyrone's knowledge, the girls sent off a sample of his DNA and tracked down Ross as a surprise. They invited him to the cobbles to meet Tyrone. Cassie, who had not seen Ross in over 40 years, failed to recognize him initially. The revelation has left her panicked about the implications for her relationship with Steve and her family.
Claire Sweeney's Exit and Emotional Departure
This storyline is set to lead to Cassie's departure from the show. Claire Sweeney quit the role after three years to pursue her dream role as Miss Hannigan in the musical Annie. Speaking to the Mirror, she said: "I’ve had wobbles all the way along. I keep saying to people: ‘oh God, am I doing the right thing?’ You’re part of a family at Coronation Street, you feel safe and protected and leaving is like stepping out into the big, wide world again. It feels like I’ve broken up with a boyfriend I’m still in love with."
Sweeney added: "I’ve loved Corrie and leaving bears no reflection on the job, the people and the work. It was just that my phone pinged and it was the producer of Annie saying ‘right, do you want to do Miss Hannigan.’ I’d been hounding him for years for this part and I just thought – ‘if I don’t do it now, it might never come again.’ But I think it’s the hardest job I’ve ever had to leave and my exit is very sad; I had a little weep over my leaving scenes. I got quite emotional."
What's Next for Tyrone and Ross?
It remains unclear whether Ross recognized Cassie or if he will expose her past to Steve. Further details about their history are expected to emerge. The central question is whether Tyrone will give Ross a chance after learning about his biological father's sudden appearance.
Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
