Canada is set to participate in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest in Bulgaria, marking the first time a new country has joined the competition since Australia in 2015. The announcement follows CBC/Radio-Canada's recent membership in the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which was finalized last week.
Canada's Entry into Eurovision
The Canadian broadcaster will compete in the semi-finals next year, with the selection process for the country's entry to be revealed at a later date. This expansion reflects the EBU's ongoing efforts to globalize the contest, which has traditionally been limited to European nations.
Reactions from Officials
Marie-Philippe Bouchard, president and chief executive of CBC/Radio-Canada, expressed enthusiasm about the development: “On this Canada Day, as we celebrate with Canadians across the country and around the world the richness and diversity of Canadian culture, we’re so excited to confirm that we’re bringing the world’s largest live music event to Canadians.”
Martin Green, director of the Eurovision Song Contest, added: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome CBC/Radio-Canada to the Eurovision Song Contest family – a further sign that, while born in Europe, the Contest continues to welcome the world.”
Historical Context
Canada becomes the first non-European country to join since Australia's debut in 2015. The 2027 contest will be held in Bulgaria, following Austria's victory in 2025. The inclusion of Canada is expected to boost viewership and diversify the musical styles represented in the competition.
