Call the Midwife Prequel Confirmed as Filming Begins
The BBC has confirmed that a prequel to the acclaimed period drama Call the Midwife has commenced filming. The series, which has run for 14 series since 2012, is based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth and adapted by Heidi Thomas. It follows midwives and nuns at Nonnatus House in 1950s East End London.

Radio Times has hailed Call the Midwife as one of the "best BBC dramas", reflected in its 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One reviewer described it as "by far the best ever TV drama series with a superb cast depicting life in the early 60s in Poplar." Another fan called it "a masterpiece of a series that tackles many issues that still concern modern society."
Prequel Storyline and Setting
The prequel is set in September 1939, with Sister Monica Joan in her prime and Sister Julienne and Sister Evangelina as young and zealous nuns. The synopsis notes: "There is no gas and air, no penicillin, no cure for TB, and no welfare state. Then war is declared - and life gets even harder." The series will explore the challenges faced by the nuns and local GP Dr Kit as they care for mothers, babies, and the poor.

The original cast included Jessica Raine, Jenny Agutter, Pam Ferris, Miranda Hart, Judy Parfitt, Helen George, Bryony Hannah, Laura Main, Cliff Parisi, and Stephen McGann.
