'Below' Netflix Thriller Josh Hartnett Walking Dead Fans

Netflix's upcoming thriller series 'Below' promises to deliver an epic and terrifying experience, perfect for fans of 'The Walking Dead.' The six-part drama, premiering on October 8, stars Hollywood A-lister Josh Hartnett alongside Charlie Heaton ('Peaky Blinders,' 'Stranger Things') and Mackenzie Davis ('Station Eleven').

Plot and Setting

Set in a small Canadian fishing town off the coast of Newfoundland, 'Below' follows the inhabitants as they are terrorized by a mysterious sea creature. The residents must find the strength to fight back and protect their community and way of life. Hartnett plays Calvin Penney, a big-hearted but stubborn fisherman haunted by his father's mysterious death decades ago. When the creature begins attacking, Calvin must keep his family safe, including his son Wade, played by Heaton.

Calvin teams up with a visiting marine researcher, played by Davis, to confront the creature and uncover the island's hidden secrets before time runs out.

Cast and Inspiration

The cast also includes Willow Kean as Ruth Penney, Ruby Stokes ('Bridgerton,' 'Lockwood & Co.') as Mary Penney, Rohan Campbell ('The Monkey') as Jay Penney, and Kaleb Horn ('Chucky') as Noah.

Creator Jesse McKeown drew inspiration from Newfoundland itself. 'I've been coming to Newfoundland for many years, and it's become a part of my life,' McKeown said. 'I just always felt like I wanted to set something here, that this would be a great place for something big and something kind of epic. It's such a unique landscape and such a rugged, dangerous, isolated, scary place in a lot of ways. But then there's also this other side to it, which is that the community is so warm and the people are so funny and unique.'

Netflix's Description

Netflix's Tudum describes the series as 'blending local myth, thrilling suspense, and heartfelt humor, this twisty six-part limited series dives into themes of family, community, and change — both terrifying and inevitable.'
