BBC Breakfast viewers were left furious during a live interview on Wednesday, June 24, when a dog was seen attacking a duck in the background, overshadowing a segment on pet safety during the UK heatwave.
Interview Focused on Heatwave Pet Safety
During the episode, presenter Jon Kay, reporting from Richmond upon Thames, spoke to Lauren Bennett from the RSPCA about keeping dogs safe in the heat. Bennett explained that heat can be fatal to dogs, urging owners to change their behaviour. She described symptoms such as heavy breathing, vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, seizures, collapse, and death.
Distraction as Dog Attacks Duck
As the interview progressed, viewers noticed a dog swimming in the lake behind Jon and Lauren. The dog picked up a duck in its mouth, and the duck attempted to escape as the dog chased it back into the water. Many viewers were upset, with one commenting on Instagram: "Poor duck that's really upsetting." Another wrote: "That's awful. I'm shocked at how many people think this is funny? That poor duck!!"
Viewers Express Outrage
A third viewer said: "That poor duck... how is this going on behind this interview with no one doing anything about it. Absolute disgrace." A fourth added: "That is b***** disgusting," while another called it "absolutely outrageous." A Richmond local named Vivi identified the duck as Lupita, stating she was badly injured with a possibly broken leg. Vivi said she was trying to find the dog's owner to report them.
Lupita the Duck Rescued
Richmond borough's official Instagram page later confirmed that Lupita had been safely rescued by Vivi, along with Mark Edwards OBE and James, and was receiving care. The post reminded dog owners to keep pets on leads. BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One at 6am.
