Jeremy Clarkson has addressed complaints from viewers about his new ITV game show, Millionaire Hot Seat, after its premiere on Tuesday (January 13). The spin-off of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire features a faster format where six contestants race against time to answer questions, with the £1 million jackpot awarded only to the player in the Hot Seat at the end.
Viewers took to social media to express frustration over contestants taking too long to answer, with one imploring: “Can someone please explain to the Contestants that they need to stop nattering and answer the questions as quickly as possible, so frustrating!” In response, Clarkson assured: “I do. Before the show every time.”
The show gives contestants 15 seconds per question, with correct answers allowing them to remain seated and continue playing, while incorrect answers result in immediate elimination. The jackpot decreases with wrong answers, but each contestant is granted one “pass” to step away from the hot seat and return later.
Prior to the premiere, Clarkson expressed enthusiasm on Twitter, saying: “I've hosted a new show starting on @ITV this evening. It's called Hot Seat, and it's Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. But faster. Can't wait to see how it's turned out.” He also admitted initial reservations about taking on the role, comparing the format to “a very expensive game of musical chairs.”
Millionaire Hot Seat airs at 7.30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
