Donald Trump has been given the green light by FIFA to join the World Cup trophy lift, potentially repeating an embarrassing moment from last year's Club World Cup. The US president could break traditional protocol by staying on stage with the winning team, just as he did when Chelsea won the Club World Cup 12 months ago.
FIFA No Objections
FIFA has no objections to Trump repeating his controversial move, according to talkSPORT, even though it would break standard protocols. Typically, the trophy remains on a plinth and is carried onto the celebration podium by a member of the winning team. Sources claim FIFA will leave the decision to Trump, who may again choose to celebrate with the champions.
Previous Controversy
Trump's decision to remain with Chelsea players after their victory over PSG led to awkward moments captured on camera. He handed the trophy to Reece James but did not exit the stage. James later admitted surprise, saying he thought Trump would present the trophy and leave. Cole Palmer, who scored twice in the final, also expressed confusion.
The White House believes Trump will again join the celebration. He has been asked to hand over the World Cup trophy to the eventual champions. Mexican and Canadian officials will be invited to the closing ceremony.
Trump was absent from the USA's first World Cup game against Paraguay due to a tight schedule, according to White House executive director Andrew Giuliani.
