The BBC drama This City is Ours has been commissioned for a third series, its cast confirmed on BBC Breakfast on Tuesday 20 October. The announcement came ahead of the second season's premiere, which is set to air on Sunday 25 October.
The Liverpudlian crime drama first aired in March 2025, starring Sean Bean as gang leader Ronnie Phelan. Following his death and a violent power struggle for control of Liverpool's drug empire, the second season picks up with Michael Kavanagh, played by James Nelson-Joyce, and his partner Diana, played by Hannah Onslow, arriving in Spain.
Cast confirm third series on BBC Breakfast
Gavin and Stacey star Laura Aikman and Benidorm star Julie Graham appeared on BBC Breakfast on Tuesday, where they teased the show's future to presenters Jon Kay and Sally Nugent. Julie shared: "The show has been commissioned for series three."
She went on to clarify: "Whether all the characters come back, you just don't know. They're bold enough to get rid of a main character, we just don't know what this show, but that's the surprise. Anyway, we're over the moon, it's incredible, it's a testament to the show."
Hannah added: "It's a really hard-working cast and crew and they all really deserve it."
What to expect in season two
The synopsis teases that Michael and Diana are "more in love than ever" but are soon dragged back into the world of crime to answer questions around Ricardo's death, with a new Colombian to deal with, Felipe. In Liverpool, a coup within the Phelan firm sends the business into disarray, and a new threat arrives in the form of Ozzie Thompson, a newly-released old-school gangster from Ronnie's past.
Michael keeps a low profile as his investigation into Ricardo's murder leads him into difficult territory, with no choice but to devise a plan that hinges on Diana's cooperation. As Banksey's son Freddie forms an unlikely friendship with Ozzie and the Phelans begin exploring business opportunities with a new supplier, more enemies lurk in the shadows.
Teasing what's to come, Julie hinted that there's "a lot of jeopardy", while Hannah said: "[Creator Stephen Butchard] is so good at those 'hold your breath' little set pieces, they come hard and fast. As the series goes on, it gets more and more tense."
New cast members and fan reaction
The second season sees James Nelson-Joyce return as Michael Kavanagh alongside Hannah Onslow as Diana Williams, with new cast members Shaun Evans as former gangster Ozzie Thompson and Álvaro Morte as Felipe Guzman, a member of the Colombian cartel and younger brother of Ricardo.
Julie praised the production team, saying: "It's testament to the show that every single crew member came back to do a second series. We've got a fantastic production team, an amazing crew, obviously a stellar cast."
Fans previously hailed the drama "absolutely brilliant", with one calling it "a true masterpiece" and another saying it was "easily one of the best TV shows I've watched for a very long time". This City is Ours airs from 9pm on Sunday, October 25, on BBC One and iPlayer.
