Netflix is set to add the hit police procedural The Rookie to its streaming library on 1 July. The series, which originally aired on ABC in 2018, follows Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, a 40-year-old who becomes the oldest rookie in the LAPD. Over seven seasons, Nolan earns his place on the force while navigating a range of cases alongside fellow trainees.
The show boasts an ensemble cast including Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones (known for Netflix's Narcos and Hawaii Five-0), Titus Makin Jr. (Glee, Pretty Little Liars), Mercedes Mason (Fear The Walking Dead), and Melissa O'Neil. According to the Express, the series has drawn frequent comparisons to Disney+'s High Potential, with fans on Facebook calling for a crossover between the two shows. One viewer asked, "The rookie, aren't they in the same city?" Another agreed, saying, "I would pick The Rookie and High Potential for my crossover shows also."
Fan Reactions and Critical Praise
On Reddit, fans have been equally enthusiastic. One user wrote, "Ugh, my favorite show! Will Trent High Potential The Rookie Feds spin off 911 (the original) ETA!! Lucifer is a MUST watch!" Another praised the cast chemistry: "Good cast chemistry and as far as generic cop shows go the rookie stands out with some extra comedy and scenes that dont take itsself too seriously." A third viewer highlighted the ensemble: "For me, I've said it 100x - it's this CAST. I like their chemistry on and off camera."
Lead actor Nathan Fillion has received particular acclaim. One fan remarked, "I've always been a Nathan Fillion fan since Firefly, so I usually give his shows a watch. He drew me in, but it was also the rest of the cast that kept me watching, too, and how the show pokes fun at itself." Another added, "Mostly because of Nathan Fillion, who is a legend." The show's tone has been a draw for many, with one viewer noting, "It's just fun, really. It doesn't take itself too seriously, doesn't pretend to be something it isn't, which is a funny and cheesy reality show with a fantastic cast." Another fan declared, "No kidding, guys, this is easily one of the best series I've ever seen."
Spin-offs and Future Seasons
The Rookie has become the third-longest-running currently airing series on ABC, with a ninth season in development. The franchise has expanded to include two spin-offs: The Rookie: Feds, starring Niecy Nash-Betts, which was cancelled after its first season, and The Rookie: North, which is currently in production. The series has proven its staying power, consistently drawing strong viewership and critical praise for its blend of drama and comedy.
The Rookie arrives on Netflix on 1 July. High Potential is available to stream on Disney+ now.
