Netflix has released the first trailer for The Boroughs, a new eight-episode sci-fi thriller from the creators of Stranger Things. The series, set in the New Mexico desert, follows a group of elderly residents who uncover a dark supernatural threat in their seemingly perfect retirement community.
The show is helmed by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, with the Duffer Brothers serving as executive producers. The star-studded cast includes Bill Pullman, Alfred Molina, Alfre Woodard, Clarke Peters, Denis O’Hare, Jena Malone, and Geena Davis.
The trailer introduces Molina's character, Sam, who moves to The Boroughs for a fresh start. However, the community's polished facade quickly crumbles as Sam and a band of unlikely elderly heroes band together to confront a monstrous entity. The teaser hints at tentacles and creeping hands lurking in the shadows.
A synopsis teases: 'In a seemingly perfect retirement community, a grieving newcomer’s monstrous encounter inspires him to join a misfit crew of unlikely heroes who uncover a dark secret that proves their golden years are more dangerous, and they are more formidable, than anyone expects.'
Addiss and Matthews described making the series as a 'dream come true,' adding that the Duffer Brothers 'bring the perfect balance of heart and horror to our story.' The Duffer Brothers praised the duo, saying they 'immediately knew they had something very special on their hands.'
The Boroughs premieres on Netflix on 21 May.
