Netflix has dropped a brand new series called The Boroughs today (May 21). It brings viewers a monster-filled sci-fi drama the likes of which has not been seen since Stranger Things.
What is The Boroughs about?
The eight-part series follows grieving newcomer Sam Cooper who discovers creatures stalking a New Mexico retirement community. When authorities dismiss his claims, he teams up with fellow residents to battle the otherworldly threat. This misfit crew of unlikely heroes uncover a dark secret that proves their 'golden years' are more dangerous, yet more formidable, than anyone expects.
Who created The Boroughs?
It is actually created by writers Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. Their previous credits include The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. However, The Boroughs is also being billed as the new series from the makers of Stranger Things, because the Duffer brothers are both credited as executive producers.
It is not the first project the filmmaker siblings have put their names to since their own creation came to a dramatic end. They also executive produced Netflix horror series Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen. This time around, the Duffer brothers have promised that the show shares the same spirit as their own hit series despite the age difference in the heroes. They told website Tudum: 'While the characters are a little older than the kids in Stranger Things - they ride golf carts instead of bikes - the spirit is very much the same.'
Who stars in The Boroughs?
Hollywood legends Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Bill Pullman, and Alfre Woodard lead the star-studded cast. The Wire's Clarke Peters and This Is Us actor Denis O'Hare also feature in the otherworldly retirement community thriller. Creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews praised their veteran cast's combined experience. 'According to some very unofficial napkin math, our stars bring something like 350 years of craft to The Boroughs,' they commented.
When can you watch The Boroughs?
All eight episodes are available to binge-watch right now on the streaming platform. It is thought it will keep viewers gripped and on the hunt for answers.
