Netflix's beloved series Sweet Magnolias is returning for its fifth season on Thursday, June 11, after a one-year hiatus. The show transports viewers back to the fictional town of Serenity, South Carolina, with some stops in Manhattan. The iconic trio of JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Heather Headley, and Brooke Elliott reprise their roles as Maddie, Helen, and Dana Sue, respectively.
Cast Shakeups
Season five brings notable changes to the cast. Carson Rowland, who played Ty, Maddie and Cal's oldest son, will not appear. Showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson explained to Us Weekly: "In his leaving, we wanted to make the best of the situation and look at what happens when people leave the people they love to chase a dream." Season four ended with Ty and Annie's (Anneliese Judge) split, so Rowland's absence may be tied to Ty touring with his band in Europe.
New additions include Jamie-Lynn Sigler as Nell Winters, a writer Maddie meets in New York; Janice Wesley as Miss Eustice, a town matron; and Courtney Grace as Courtney Sinclair, Ronnie's (Brandon Quinn) new business partner. Also joining are John Gabriel Rodriguez, Aidan Merwarth, Austin Woods, and Iman Benson.
Themes and Reception
Anderson told Tudum that "chasing your dreams" is the central theme of season five. "In everybody chasing their dreams, somebody's catching them, some people are finding they were changed, and some people are just stumbling," she said. The show remains a hit, with fans calling it a "comfort watch" and a "great feel good show." One viewer wrote: "This is one of the most well-written, captivating, genuine and heartfelt shows I've seen in a long time." Another added: "Sweet Magnolias is a warm and comforting series that shines through its focus on friendship, personal growth, and family bonds."
Season five of Sweet Magnolias premieres on Netflix on June 11.
