Strictly faces new blow as BBC criticised over presenters

Strictly Come Dancing has been handed another major blow as the BBC faces criticism over its recent presenter appointments, with falling ratings and viewer complaints putting pressure on the long-running show.

The dance programme, which has entertained British audiences for over 22 years, has seen a dip in viewership despite being one of the channel's most popular entertainment shows. According to BARB's latest figures, Strictly was beaten by The Great British Bake Off and ITV drama The Blame in the latest ratings, and has seen a significant drop compared to other popular shows including Celebrity Traitors.

Viewer Complaints Over Presenting Line-up

Industry insiders and fans have attributed the ongoing decline to several factors, including mixed reactions to the new presenting line-up and frustration over Sunday results being leaked online before broadcast.

The new presenting team features Emma Willis, Johannes Radebe and Josh Widdicombe. While some viewers have praised the trio, others have continued to question Widdicombe's inclusion, with one viewer suggesting he "looks like a spare part" alongside his co-hosts.

Pressure on the BBC

The BBC has come under pressure to make significant cuts in recent years, with the broadcaster reporting that its income from the £180 annual licence fee has fallen by a quarter over the past decade. The corporation currently faces pressure to make savings of £500m by 2028.

BBC Three, responsible for major hits including Fleabag, Normal People and Killing Eve, BBC Scotland and BBC Radio 4 Extra linear broadcast services will close in spring 2027 as part of cost-cutting measures, the corporation announced in October. Popular shows including Drag Race UK and Live at the Apollo have also been axed.

Calls for a Reshuffle

Some have suggested the show could benefit from a simple reshuffle, with comedian Ellie Taylor potentially taking a more prominent role. Taylor has been praised for her work on Strictly's sister show It Takes Two, which was previously fronted by Fleur East and Janette Manrara.

With the BBC taking an axe to much of what licence fee payers enjoy, there are concerns that Strictly could face the chopping block if bosses do not start listening to the public.
