BBC bosses are reportedly concerned that Strictly Come Dancing's judging panel could be split up, with doubts over whether Shirley Ballas and Motsi Mabuse will return for the next series.
The uncertainty follows a major revamp this series that saw Emma Willis, Josh Widdicombe, and Johannes Radebe replace long-term co-hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman. Contract negotiations have not yet officially started, but Anton Du Beke and Craig Revel Horwood have indicated they intend to come back, according to reports.
Judges' futures in question
Shirley Ballas, who joined the show in 2017 and would mark a decade on the panel if she stayed, is reportedly a potential "flight risk" after taking on a guest role on the US show Dancing With The Stars. Motsi Mabuse, who has been a judge since 2019, has also yet to confirm her plans.
Craig Revel Horwood has served on the panel since the inaugural series in 2004, while Anton Du Beke took his seat in 2021. Both are said to have pencilled next year's live shows into their diaries.
Source claims and responses
A source told The Sun: "Strictly love the current judging panel and are really keen to try and persuade everyone to come back next year. Contract negotiations won't start until the current series is wrapped, but already Craig and Anton have made it clear they intend to return.
"Motsi and Shirley are yet to make up their minds. Shirley in particular could be a flight risk for bosses, especially if her guest appearance on Dancing With The Stars goes well."
The Mirror has approached representatives for Shirley and Motsi as well as Strictly for comment. Another insider told the publication that the speculation is likely based on Craig and Anton both performing in theatre tours next autumn, with websites for both productions advising they won't appear at Saturday dates, suggesting they are expected to be recording Strictly on those days.
Presenter concerns addressed
The BBC has also responded to claims it has already decided to change its new presenting line-up. Emma Willis, 50, is thought to be staying, but Josh Widdicombe's future has been questioned, with one source said to be close to the show telling the Daily Mail: "It doesn't work. Not only have many of the traditional viewers stopped watching, the show has become the butt of jokes, a laughing stock."
Johannes Radebe has also faced criticism, with a theory suggesting he could become a Strictly judge next year. However, the BBC told the Mirror that the anonymous source comments were "pure and utter speculation".
