Strictly Come Dancing bosses have confirmed the return of professional dancer Aljaz Skorjanec for the show's 20th anniversary series, a move seen by PR experts as an attempt to deflect attention from recent abuse allegations.
The BBC programme has faced intense scrutiny after former contestants Amanda Abbington and Zara McDermott lodged complaints against their dance partners Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima respectively. Pernice has denied claims of a 'militant' approach, while Di Prima was axed following footage of a 'kicking' incident.
PR expert Carla Speight told the Express: 'Strictly need his return. They’ll be hoping it distracts from the complaints and incidents of abuse from other dancers toward celebrities like Zara, Amanda and Laura.' She added that Skorjanec, a fan favourite, could boost ratings and provide a 'positive distraction'.
The BBC has announced new welfare measures, including a chaperone present 'at all times' during training. Director General Tim Davie apologised to mistreated contestants and confirmed the show's future.
The 22nd series will air from September, with tickets available via random draw. Dates include Elstree Studios from September 21 to December 14, and a Blackpool special on November 16.
