Stormzy is set to co-produce a new biopic about Arsenal legend Ian Wright, exploring the footballer's traumatic childhood and remarkable rise to fame. The film will delve into Wright's early life on the Honor Oak Estate in Brockley, south London, highlighting his struggles and the pivotal role of an inspiring teacher and a protective sibling.
From Trauma to Triumph
Ian Wright, Arsenal's second-highest scorer in history and Crystal Palace's Player of the Century, endured a childhood marked by trauma before finding solace in football. The biopic aims to showcase his journey from a housing estate to World Cup dreams, questioning whether talent and hard work alone can overcome adversity.
Wright described the project as "surreal" but long overdue. "There are parts of my life that will be familiar because they've been talked about over the years, but this film is the first time we're bringing it all together," he said. He added that retelling his story highlighted how much Britain has changed since his parents arrived on the Windrush and the lasting impact of those experiences.
Stormzy's Role
Stormzy, the acclaimed grime artist, called his involvement a "real honour." He stated: "Wrighty's journey goes far beyond football. It's about resilience, family and believing in yourself against the odds. He's inspired generations on and off the pitch and we're so proud to help bring such an important and powerful story to the screen."
The biopic promises hard-hitting moments but aims to leave viewers with "hope and joy," according to Wright.
Beyond Football
Since retiring in 2000, Wright has become a revered broadcaster, championing women's football and highlighting the impact of domestic violence on children. He was awarded an OBE by Prince William in 2023 and has supported the Jordan Sinnott Foundation for grassroots sports.
The film will explore Wright's life beyond the pitch, showcasing his legacy as a cultural icon and advocate.
