In a major announcement that has thrilled fantasy fans worldwide, comedian and television host Stephen Colbert is set to embark on a new creative journey as the writer of an upcoming Lord of the Rings film. The project, tentatively titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, was revealed in a surprise video featuring Colbert alongside acclaimed director Peter Jackson at New York Comic Con in 2024.
From Late Show to Middle-earth
Colbert, who concluded his tenure as host of The Late Show in May, has secured his next high-profile role in the entertainment industry. A self-professed avid and lifelong fan of J.R.R. Tolkien's works, Colbert previously made a small cameo appearance in Jackson's 2013 film The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, alongside his wife and children. This new venture marks a significant step up, placing him at the helm of a major cinematic addition to the beloved franchise.
Film Details and Creative Team
According to industry reports from Deadline, the film will be written by Stephen Colbert in collaboration with Philippa Boyens and Peter McGee. Peter Jackson, the visionary director behind the original Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit films, will produce the project alongside longtime franchise producers Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh. The announcement video, shared on social media, captured the excitement and mutual respect between Colbert and Jackson.
Colbert explained his inspiration for the story, stating that he was motivated after rereading The Fellowship of the Ring. He specifically focused on chapters three through eight, which were not adapted in Jackson's initial film. "I thought, wait, maybe that could be its own story that could fit into the larger narrative. Could we create something that remains completely faithful to the books while also honouring the cinematic legacy of the movies?" Colbert remarked during the video conversation.
Plot and Setting
The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past is set approximately fourteen years after the departure of Frodo from the Shire. The storyline will follow the beloved hobbits Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they embark on a journey to retrace the initial steps of their original adventure. Concurrently, Sam's daughter, Elanor, uncovers a long-buried secret that reveals why the War of the Ring was nearly lost before it even began. This narrative promises to delve deeper into Tolkien's rich lore and expand the cinematic universe.
Development and Collaboration
Colbert revealed that he initially developed the story outline with his son, screenwriter Peter Colbert, before mustering the courage to approach Jackson about the idea. "It took me a few years to gather my confidence, but about two years ago, I finally reached out. You appreciated the concept enough to discuss it further, and I am absolutely thrilled that Warner Bros. has embraced the project," Colbert told Jackson in the video.
Jackson humorously referenced Colbert's newfound availability following the contentious cancellation of The Late Show, which Colbert had hosted since 2015. The cancellation drew criticism as potentially politically motivated, occurring shortly after Colbert criticised CBS's parent company, Paramount, for a $16 million settlement with Donald Trump. Colbert responded light-heartedly, "It turns out I'm going to have some free time starting this summer," to which Jackson quipped, "Isn't that fortunate?"
Expanding the Tolkien Cinematic Universe
Colbert's film represents the second upcoming project set in Tolkien's expansive world. Another film, Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027. Directed by Andy Serkis, who famously portrayed Gollum, that film will follow Aragorn's quest to capture Gollum in the period between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, aiming to prevent the ring from falling into Sauron's hands.
The existing six films in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit series have collectively grossed an impressive US$5.9 billion worldwide, underscoring the enduring popularity and commercial viability of the franchise. With Colbert's deep personal passion for Tolkien's work and Jackson's proven expertise, The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past is poised to captivate both longtime enthusiasts and new audiences alike.
