Sally Nugent, the BBC Breakfast presenter, has shed light on her recent absence from the programme after a three-day break. The journalist, who typically hosts the show from Monday to Wednesday alongside Jon Kay, was replaced by Luxmy Gopal this week without an on-air explanation.
On Tuesday evening (5 August), Nugent took to Instagram Stories to share glimpses of her birthday celebrations, revealing the reason for her time off. The 54-year-old posted well-wishes from friends and a snap of herself enjoying celebratory drinks, wearing a white mini dress and sunglasses, captioned: 'Pink wine'. Another image showed her unwrapping gifts and cards.
Nugent also shared a humorous birthday card from her BBC colleague Jon Kay, which playfully teased about her age. Kay paid tribute to Nugent on social media, posting: 'Not only is 5th August International Dolly Parton Day... it's also International Sally Nugent Day. Happy Birthday to my brilliant, clever, kind and funny friend xx #bbcbreakfast #birthday'.
Viewers were quick to respond, with one commenting: 'Love you two on morning news,' and another adding: 'What a team! Happy birthday Sally x.' A third fan remarked: 'You are a great team on @bbcbreakfast!' and a fourth called them 'the best'.
Nugent and Kay took over presenting duties for three episodes weekly on BBC Breakfast in 2022 after Dan Walker's departure. Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty host from Thursday to Saturday, with a rotation of presenters for Sunday's edition. BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One from 6am.
