Ruth Langsford fights back tears on Loose Women after family dog's death
Ruth Langsford in tears on Loose Women over dog's death

Ruth Langsford thanked viewers for their "thousands" of well-wishing messages as she addressed the recent loss of her family dog on Monday's Loose Women, struggling to hold back tears during the show.

The Loose Women host took time out part way through the episode to acknowledge fans who had sent messages following the death of her dog Maggie. Last week, Ruth announced that Maggie had "gone to sleep forever" at the age of 16.

Emotional Tribute on Air

As soon as she began talking about her dog, Ruth became teary-eyed and was handed tissues by her co-stars. Joined by Janet Street Porter, Kelly Brook and Jane Moore, they noted she had only recently discussed Maggie on the show.

Ruth revealed that the very same day was when they lost her. Speaking directly to the camera, she thanked everyone for their messages, saying she was "working my way through to say thank you."

She went on to share that when she got home, a relative told her that Maggie was not right and was not getting out of her bed. Ruth said it was then she knew it was her time, adding: "It was sad but it was peaceful."

Viewer Support and Personal Reflection

Ruth also shared that she believed Maggie waited for one of her children to be there before it happened. She confessed that years ago, before owning the dog, she would have "internally rolled her eyes" at someone who responded tearfully to a pet's death, but now understood just how "heartbreaking" it really was.

However, Ruth commented that she had not told her mum about Maggie's death because she is suffering with Alzheimer's.

Viewers watching along were quick to show their support. One posted on social media: "Oh Ruth. You gave your beautiful Maggie a very happy life." Another replied: "We can so understand Ruth. Much love xxx."

Instagram Announcement

At the time, Ruth posted on Instagram: "It is with a heavy heart that I tell you our beautiful Maggie has gone to sleep forever. She was 16 years old and sadly this was her time."

"Her passing was painless and peaceful and we were with her until the very end. We are so thankful to have had her in our lives for 15 years…..she gave us so much joy & unconditional love. We will treasure our memories forever. Rest in peace our beautiful girl."

Loose Women airs weekdays on ITV from 12:30pm.
