The Boys series finale, titled 'Blood and Bone', aired on Wednesday, 20th May, and delivered a brutal conclusion for several characters. However, former Seven member Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott) was notably absent, having not appeared since the end of season three.
Maeve, a super-strong heroine inspired by Wonder Woman, chose to retire from superhero life in the season three finale. She faked her death and now lives quietly with her girlfriend Elena (Nicola Correia-Damude), having lost an eye in a final confrontation with Homelander (Antony Starr).
Showrunner Eric Kripke revealed that he would have loved to bring McElligott back for a cameo, but the Irish actress has 'mostly retired' from acting. Her schedule did not permit a return, though Kripke described the decision as 'very friendly, non-controversial'.
Despite her physical absence, Maeve's legacy was referenced in the finale. Starlight (Erin Moriarty) spoke about her to Gen V's Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair), admitting that Maeve had become bitter and checked out, warning against losing oneself in the role of a hero.
