Aubrey Plaza brought a surprise dose of star power to the second-to-last episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday night. The 41-year-old actress made a grand entrance, showcasing her heavily pregnant figure with characteristic deadpan humor.
Plaza's Appearance and Jokes
After guest announcer John Dickerson introduced her, the audience erupted as Plaza strode out in a navy dress that downplayed her baby bump, partially hidden behind a blue notecard. When Colbert asked how she was doing, she shifted awkwardly and said, "Um, everything's going normal here! Nothing weird..." before joking, "My water broke backstage. They said it was gonna take a couple hours, so I can still do this." Colbert replied it was "very generous" of her to stay, adding they would get a "squeegee."
Plaza then asked, "So Stephen, cats or dogs?" Colbert paused before answering, "Dogs." The rapid-fire segment moved on to questions from James Taylor and Robert De Niro.
Pregnancy and Relationship
Plaza revealed last month she is expecting her first child with Girls star Christopher Abbott, 40. The baby is due in the fall. A source told People: "It was a beautiful surprise after an emotional year." The couple first worked together in 2019 on the indie psychological drama Black Bear and later on stage in Danny And The Deep Blue Sea in 2023.
Personal Tragedy
Plaza's pregnancy follows the tragic death of her estranged husband, Jeff Baena, who died by suicide on January 3, 2025. The couple had separated in September 2024. Plaza has spoken about her grief, describing it as "a giant ocean of awfulness."
