Ofcom has launched an investigation into Monday's episode of Good Morning Britain after receiving more than 40,000 complaints about comments made by host Piers Morgan. Viewers were outraged after Morgan dismissed comments by the Duchess of Sussex about her mental health during her and Prince Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey.
In the interview, Meghan told Winfrey she had had suicidal thoughts and asked for help, but was told it would not look good by a senior palace aide. Morgan's comments were criticised by mental health charity Mind, which said it was 'disappointed and concerned' and stressed the importance of treating those sharing mental health experiences with 'dignity, respect and empathy'.
The controversy escalated on Tuesday when Morgan walked off set during a discussion with weather presenter Alex Beresford, who defended the couple. Beresford said: 'I understand you've got a personal relationship with Meghan Markle, or had one, and she cut you off. She's entitled to cut you off if she wants to. Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I don't think she has but yet you continue to trash her.'
ITV's chief executive Dame Carolyn McCall said Morgan's storming off was not 'manufactured' and that she completely believed what Meghan said. When asked if Morgan would lose his job, she declined to comment. Morgan later returned to the set and apologised for his remarks about mental health, stating: 'If someone is feeling that way they should get the treatment and help they need every time.'
