Nick Knowles says 'it's been an honour' as BBC confirms future of DIY SOS
Nick Knowles: DIY SOS 'rested' in 2027 due to BBC budget cuts

The BBC has confirmed that DIY SOS will be paused in 2027 as part of cost-cutting measures, prompting presenter Nick Knowles to share his disappointment with fans.

The show, which first aired in 1999, has been a staple on BBC screens for over two decades. Knowles, 64, has fronted the programme throughout its run, visiting households across the UK with a core team of builders to tackle large-scale construction projects.

In 2010, the series was relaunched as DIY SOS: The Big Build, shifting its focus to bigger charitable and community-driven projects.

BBC's Budget Cuts and Show's Future

The decision to rest the series comes as the BBC aims to save £500m over three years. The corporation has already cancelled several well-known programmes, including Blankety Blank, Celebrity Mastermind and Live At The Apollo.

A BBC spokesperson said: "In light of the BBC's savings challenges we have taken the decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027 and commission a new spin-off show instead from producers South Shore."

"DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life will revisit successes from the show's past and expand the brand on the BBC in a more cost-effective way next year."

Nick Knowles' Emotional Response

Following the announcement, Knowles took to Instagram to share his reaction. He wrote: "You may have already seen the news that DIY SOS is being put on 'pause'."

"Of course, I'm disappointed not to be filming the show next year or again in the same format we know and love. But I do understand there's no endless pot of money at the BBC and sometimes they have to make difficult decisions."

He added: "Thank you for all the messages and comments over the weekend. It's so clear you share my sentiment and deep love for this show."

"What I always come back to is that it's the people who are the beating heart of SOS. Over the years we've had thousands of tradespeople, suppliers and volunteers, all people trying to make their own living, who have shown up time and time again for the families who need it most."

"Kind, hardworking people and real working-class heroes coming together to build a better community. It really is the best of Britain and we need to see more of it on telly."

Fans React to the News

The 64-year-old also shared a roundup of photos from his 26 years on the show, including selfies with the team and a picture with Princes William and Harry.

He added: "For 26 years it's been an honour and a privilege to be part of DIY SOS and I've loved nothing more than making it."

Fans flooded the comments with supportive messages. One said: "Very sad news! You made such a difference to so many!"

A second wrote: "It's very sad, not only because the show is entertaining, which it undoubtedly is, but far more because it does such a great thing."

A third added: "Great photos, it brings back memories I've watched the show from the very start." A fourth said: "The best show I am gutted."
