Nick Knowles has confirmed that the final episode of DIY SOS will air on Tuesday, October 27, bringing the BBC programme to a close after 27 years. The broadcaster is pausing the show, and Knowles shared his disappointment with fans earlier this month.
He explained that the programme will not be filming next year or again in the same format that people know and love. However, he added at the time: "I do understand there's no endless pot of money at the BBC and sometimes they have to make difficult decisions."
Fans react to the end of DIY SOS
This week, Knowles took a moment to share a collection of images of his time on the programme throughout the years ahead of the final episode. He captioned the post: "Last one Tuesday this week - @bbcdiysos on 8pm BBC1."
"It's been a blast - it's been an honour - it's been emotional but most of all it's been about how resilient, kind, funny, generous and empathetic the Great British public are - I've loved every minute of it."
It was not long before people commented on the nostalgic post, with many sharing their thoughts on the programme coming to an end after 27 years. One person said: "Totally unfair, and it's so very sad to see such an amazing program come to an end. Thank you for all the beautiful dreams you've made come true for all those deserving families. Still in shock over this."
Someone else wrote: "Absolutely gutted to see this come to an end, well done to Nick & all the team for such a brilliant programme & the 1000's of volunteer tradespeople. I do hope another channel brings you all back together very soon." While a third person commented: "Can we petition to renew DIYSOS maybe @netflixuk @primevideouk @channel4."
Another person said: "This is absolutely outrageous they have cancelled DIY SOS. You and the team will forever be missed by so many! Not all superheroes wear capes....sometimes they wear a purple polo shirt and a white hard hat @nickknowles and the team."
Petition launched by fans
Since the announcement, there has been a petition set up by disgruntled fans of the show, which currently has over 43,000 signatures. The petition, titled 'Prevent the cancellation of beloved BBC show. DIY SOS', was launched by self-employed plasterer David Claydon, who appeared on the programme last year.
Speaking about the show being paused, a BBC spokesperson said: "In light of the BBC's savings challenges, we have taken the decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027 and commission a new spin-off show instead from producers South Shore."
"DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life will revisit successes from the show's past and expand the brand on the BBC in a more cost-effective way next year." DIY SOS continues Tuesday, October 27 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 8pm.
