Monty Don's final episode of Gardeners' World will air on November 6, the BBC has confirmed, bringing the 57th series to a close after 23 years fronting the programme.
The 71-year-old announced earlier this year that he would step down from his role, telling fans he would not return after the current series. The broadcaster has now set a date for his farewell, while confirming that Don will feature in a couple of winter specials.
Co-star pays tribute
Reflecting on his colleague's departure, co-star Adam Frost told Gethin Jones and Michelle Ackerley on Morning Live: "Bless him, he is going to be sorely, sorely missed and his dogs.
"He's hanging up his trowel for television screens. I'm sure he will be gardening, but he's my friend, and I wish him all the best, great man."
Why Monty is leaving
In an official statement, Monty explained his decision to leave the BBC programme, saying it felt like the "right time" for a fresh change of direction. The presenter also confirmed he would continue to collaborate with the BBC on various other projects.
Looking back on his time on Gardeners' World, he said: "Throughout that time - and around seven hundred programmes - I have had the privilege of sharing my own abiding passion for gardens and gardening with an equally passionate, and often equally knowledgeable audience.
"That connection with millions, not just in Britain but across the world, who share a love of gardens, plants and the natural world, is something I have always treasured and which I increasingly believe to be at the heart of a life well lived.
"I have also always relished the craft of programme making and to do so, week in week out, as part of a superlative BBC team has been a deeply rewarding experience. But now is the right time for a change.
"I look forward to continuing to work with and for the BBC on other projects, as well as following new avenues. There are more books to write, more programmes to make. And of course, I will still be gardening, dog by my side, here at Longmeadow."
Fans react to departure
Once Monty's departure was confirmed, devoted viewers were quick to share their reactions, with many describing it as the end of an era. On Instagram, one follower wrote: "Monty is an absolute legend! Gardeners' World simply won't be the same without him. Wishing him all the very best for his next chapter - I'm sure whatever comes next will be a huge success!"
While another commented: "You will be missed so much." Another added: "Monty and his dogs will be missed. Wishing Monty all the very best for his future endeavours. End of an era!"
Gardeners' World is available to watch Fridays on BBC Two from 9pm.
