Monty Don, who departs Gardeners' World on November 6, has described the past year as "a difficult year" for his garden at Longmeadow, attributing the challenges to the scorching summer weather.
The 71-year-old presenter, speaking to Radio Times, noted that gardeners must adapt. He said: "It's been a difficult year, but gardeners learn, adapt and shift. There have been silver linings, and figs are one of them."
Departure and Winter Specials
BBC viewers have watched Monty front the programme from his garden since 2011, where he shares his expertise and enthusiasm for horticulture. His final episode approaches, but the BBC has confirmed he will appear in several winter specials, offering reassurance to his supporters.
When announcing his departure, Monty told viewers of the BBC programme that it seemed like the "right time" for a new change of direction, though he confirmed he would remain involved with the BBC on numerous other ventures.
Reflecting on His Tenure
Looking back on his time with the show, he stated: "I have had the privilege of sharing my own abiding passion for gardens and gardening with an equally passionate, and often equally knowledgeable audience."
"That connection with millions, not just in Britain but across the world, who share a love of gardens, plants and the natural world, is something I have always treasured and which I increasingly believe to be at the heart of a life well lived."
He added: "I have also always relished the craft of programme making and to do so, week in week out, as part of a superlative BBC team has been a deeply rewarding experience. But now is the right time for a change."
"I look forward to continuing to work with and for the BBC on other projects, as well as following new avenues. There are more books to write, more programmes to make. And of course, I will still be gardening, dog by my side, here at Longmeadow."
Speculation Over Successor
Following news of his departure, speculation has mounted over his potential successor, with Adam Frost emerging as a fan favourite. Speaking on the Outsiding podcast with Caitlin Moran about the speculation, he described the situation as "all a bit crackers".
He said: "It was a surprise. I suppose, talking to Monty, you get the sense that he was getting to the point of going, 'Actually, maybe I'll hang the trowel up, I've got other things that I want to do'. I didn't think, necessarily, it was going to come when it did. Then yeah, obviously the whole, 'Who's taking over?'"
When Caitlin enquired whether he wished to assume the role, he responded: "Do you know, hand on heart, I'm really not that worried. I quite like my life the way it is. I've just tried to do what I do and just ignore the outside world and just crack on."
Gardeners' World continues Fridays on BBC Two at 8pm.
