Hundreds of people have signed a petition against Meghan Markle's new television role as co-host of Junior Masterchef Australia, with critics arguing an Australian should fill the position.
The Duchess of Sussex is expected to spend weeks in Melbourne filming for the show as a co-host in early-to-mid 2027, a role that has drawn sharp criticism from members of the public.
Petitioners criticise casting choice
Rosa, 76, said in Melbourne: "I think it's a joke. Why do we need her? We have so many Australians that could do that job. I'm not a fan of hers. I think we should get an Australian to do it."
Selby Witteveen, 77, who until 2020 lived in London and Hythe in Kent, said: "I hate her. She thinks she is a chef. Somebody has paid for her to come. She just wants money. She is there only trading on royalty, which she is no longer."
Questions over her career
The duchess is no longer acting and continues to promote her lifestyle brand As Ever. She is not a chef, which has raised questions about why Australian television would want her for the role.
During a previous appearance on MasterChef Australia, Prince Harry was involved via a video phone call, leading some to suggest her connection to royalty is the reason for the booking.
Expected to continue regardless
Observers expect the duchess to ignore the criticism and continue with her plans, including efforts to gain publicity and income. The role will keep her in Australia, far from Britain, for a period.
