Matt Smith's New Dark Comedy Praised by Viewers as 'Superb'

Matt Smith is receiving widespread acclaim for his role in the new dark comedy series The Death of Bunny Munro, which has been hailed as the next Adolescence. The six-part adaptation of Nick Cave's novel of the same name premiered in its entirety, allowing viewers to binge all episodes at once.

The series follows Bunny Munro, a middle-aged salesman obsessed with sex, who embarks on a journey across Sussex with his son after his wife's death. While packed with black humour, the show also explores themes of bereavement, drawing comparisons to Netflix's Adolescence for its examination of misogyny and its roots.

Radio Times awarded the series four out of five stars, noting that it 'almost serves as a prequel' to Adolescence, exploring how objectification and disrespect of women were taught to boys long before social media amplified such attitudes. The review praised the show's revelatory approach to these themes.

Social media users flocked to X to heap praise on Smith's performance. One user wrote: '#MattSmith you really have outdone yourself with Bunny Munro. Just superb. I love him and I hate him all at the same time. Give this man his flowers and give him ALL THE AWARDS!' Another commented: 'Matt is so great as a despicable mf... the show's kinda depressing and funny so far.'

Rachel Louise declared: 'Despite only having seen those first two episodes, I'm pretty confident in saying I think The Death of Bunny Munro is actually Matt Smith's best role yet.' The series, shot on location in Sussex, has been described as a 'compulsive read' by Nick Cave's website, possessing 'all Nick Cave's trademark horror and humanity'.
