Live-Action Mr Benn Film Set for Production with Director Kirk Jones
A live-action film adaptation of the beloved British children's television series Mr Benn is officially moving forward into production, with acclaimed director Kirk Jones taking the helm. Jones, known for directing films such as Nanny McPhee and Waking Ned, has expressed his deep admiration for the original cartoon and his commitment to bringing its magical world to a new generation of viewers.
The Legacy of Mr Benn and Its Creator
The Mr Benn series first premiered on the BBC in 1971, created by the talented David McKee, who passed away in 2022. The show followed the adventures of a seemingly ordinary man who, upon visiting a mysterious fancy dress shop, gained access to extraordinary worlds through magical portals. Despite its short run of only 13 episodes, ending in March 1972, the series left a lasting impact, with a special one-off episode airing on Nick Jr in 2005.
In a 2017 interview with the Guardian, McKee revealed that he intended Mr Benn to represent "Mr Everybody," exploring themes of escapism from daily routines. Over the years, several attempts to adapt the series into a film have been made, including a version starring John Hannah as Mr Benn and Ben Kingsley as the shopkeeper, but none progressed to production until now.
Director's Vision and Production Timeline
Kirk Jones shared his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "I adored Mr Benn as a child and immediately saw the importance of introducing him to a new generation. Mr Benn finds a unique way to travel through time and space, visiting historical and futuristic worlds to solve apparently monumental problems, with kindness, compassion, common sense. If all goes to plan, Mr Benn might even save the world."
Casting for the film is scheduled to commence later this year, with principal photography expected to begin in 2027. This development marks a significant milestone for fans of the cult animation, promising a fresh take on the timeless story of an ordinary man's extraordinary journeys.
