Netflix Announces Early Second Season Renewal for Little House on the Prairie Reboot
In a bold move, Netflix has confirmed a second season renewal for its upcoming Little House on the Prairie reboot, months before the first season has even premiered. The streaming giant revealed this decision ahead of the show's debut on July 9, 2026, showcasing strong confidence in the new adaptation.
Background and Production Details
The original series, which aired on NBC from 1974 to 1983, was based on Laura Ingalls Wilder's best-selling books and enjoyed over 200 episodes. Recently, it has seen a resurgence in popularity due to its availability on Peacock. Netflix first announced the reboot in January 2025, with production led by showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine.
In a statement, Sonnenshine expressed her gratitude, saying: “I’m incredibly grateful to our wonderful cast and crew, who put their hearts and hard work into making our first season come alive. We can’t wait to share this new adaptation of the Little House books with the world, and we’re thrilled that Netflix is giving us the opportunity to continue the story.”
Executive Support and Creative Vision
Jinny Howe, Netflix’s head of US and Canada scripted series, added: “We are delighted to renew this beautiful reimagining of Little House on the Prairie for a second season ahead of its Netflix debut. The exceptional work by Rebecca Sonnenshine and the entire cast and crew on Season 1 has established a rich foundation of storytelling for years to come. With its hopeful spirit and emotional authenticity, we’re confident that Little House will deliver even more of what fans truly love.”
When the reboot was initially announced, Sonnenshine shared her personal connection to the material: “I fell deeply in love with these books when I was five years old. They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker, and I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new global audience with Netflix.”
Legacy and Previous Attempts
The original series was produced by Ed Friendly, and the reboot is being overseen by his son Trip under their Friendly Family Productions banner. Trip Friendly previously stated: “It has been a long-held dream of mine to carry on my father’s legacy and adapt Wilder’s classic American stories for a 21st century audience in a way that brings together fans of both the books and the original television series. I am thrilled by our talented creative team led by Rebecca Sonnenshine who are bringing these beloved stories about family, community, and survival to longtime fans and new generations.”
This is not the first attempt to revive the beloved series. A film adaptation was in development in 2014 but never reached production, making Netflix's current project a significant milestone for fans.
