The psychological thriller Little Disasters concluded on Channel 5 tonight, revealing that Rob Baird, played by Stephen Campbell Moore, was responsible for the head injury to baby Betsey. The six-part drama, based on Sarah Vaughan's bestselling novel, has captivated viewers with its exploration of friendship, motherhood, and secrets.
Who Hurt Betsey?
In the penultimate episode, Jess Carrisford (Diane Kruger) was taken into police custody after it was discovered she had left her children, Frankie and Betsey, alone while she went to the corner shop. However, the episode revealed that Rob had accidentally caused Betsey's injury. He had visited the house while Jess was out, hoping to persuade Ed Carrisford (JJ Field) to invest in his business. While attempting to help Frankie change Betsey's nappy, Rob placed the baby on a kitchen island and became distracted by papers with Ed's signature. Betsey fell onto the hard floor. Rob then blamed Frankie and urged him to stay silent, threatening that Jess would go to jail if the truth came out. This explained Jess's vague accounts and Frankie's erratic behavior, as he experienced flashbacks. The case against Jess was closed, and the friend group, minus Rob, reunited for Betsey's birthday picnic.
How the Book Differs
In Vaughan's 2020 novel, the culprit is Charlotte (Shelley Conn), one of Jess's closest friends. In the book, Charlotte visits the house while Jess is out and attempts to help Frankie with Betsey. Frankie unexpectedly pushes her, causing Charlotte to drop the baby. She then panics and fails to seek immediate help. According to Vaughan, the producers at RoughCut changed the perpetrator because they found it unrealistic that a woman would leave a harmed baby. Vaughan noted a double standard about gender expectations, but the adaptation aimed for greater plausibility.
Viewer Reactions
Viewers have called the series "addictive" and "brilliant," praising the performances of Diane Kruger, Jo Joyner, Shelley Conn, and Patrick Baladi. The drama aired over two weeks on Channel 5, having first broadcast on Paramount+ in May 2025.
