Lena Dunham has revealed that she has a plot line in mind for a film continuation of the HBO series 'Girls', nine years after the show's divisive finale. The series, which aired for six seasons from 2012 to 2017, followed the lives of Hannah Horvath and her friends as they navigated young adulthood in New York City. Often compared to 'Sex and the City', the show ended with Hannah grappling with motherhood after a pregnancy with a surf instructor, supported by her friend Marnie Michaels, while Jessa Johansson reconciled with Hannah and Shoshanna Shapiro distanced herself from the group.
Dunham's Vision for the Film
In a recent interview on SiriusXM, Dunham responded to fan calls for a follow-up, stating she would 'love to do' a film. 'I have to say, I’ve got a little plot line in my brain. I do,' she said. 'It’s impossible not to think about where they are now.' The 39-year-old creator also mentioned a new text group with her former co-stars, including Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, Allison Williams, and Andrew Rannells, called 'Survivors of the Crackcident', referencing a memorable episode. Dunham shared that Kirke often jokes about her character Jessa being 'really into RFK Jr.' and anti-vaccine, adding, 'She does not want anyone getting vaccines. She is pissed.'
Cast Dynamics and Renaissance
Dunham described her castmates as her muses and emphasized the importance of timing for a potential film. 'We don’t want to come back to the party too early. We want to be appropriately missed,' she said. The show is currently experiencing a renaissance, partly due to Dunham’s new memoir, 'Famesick', which details her experiences making the series and her personal life, including her relationship with Jack Antonoff. In the memoir, she also recounts an incident with co-star Adam Driver, describing him as 'verbally aggressive' and 'physically imposing' during a rehearsal when she forgot her lines. Driver has not yet responded to these claims.
