Glaswegian standup Larry Dean, a cast member on the UK version of Saturday Night Live, opens up about the show's controlled chaos, a memorable heckle, and his upcoming Edinburgh show. In an interview, Dean reveals that SNL UK is a mix of mayhem and meticulous organisation, with a team of top-tier professionals ensuring everything comes together from Monday to Saturday.
Getting the Call
Dean recalls being woken up in Daniel Sloss's bedroom when he got the news about joining SNL UK. He admits he doesn't actually remember the details and often tells a different story each time.
The Cutting Process
Describing the sketch selection process, Dean explains that after a Wednesday table read, the team decides which sketches proceed to Saturday's dress rehearsal. Typically, three or four sketches don't make it to air. He quotes Lorne Michaels' advice to let go of ideas for the good of the show, emphasising the ego-less team spirit.
Early Comedy Days
Dean started standup at Southampton Solent University after a friend began performing. He travelled from university to London for open mics, giving up alcohol to afford the trips. His early inspirations include Billy Connolly, Richard Pryor, Jim Carrey, and Robin Williams.
Memorable Heckle
One particularly harsh heckle in Dundee involved an audience member saying their father was dying and that Dean's gig wasn't cheering them up. Dean recalls his heart pounding after that, and even a year later, the audience remembered the incident.
New Show: Hellbent
Dean's new show, Hellbent, is more sketch-based and character-driven, promising to be wilder than his usual material. He also shares his pre-show rituals: walking and warming up his face by smiling in the mirror to boost his mood.
Post-Show and Moving Forward
When asked about post-show rituals, Dean jokes that alcohol and partying count. He notes the challenge of transitioning from standup to sketch, where he must trust instincts more when performing others' writing. Having moved to Manchester in December, Dean hasn't yet slept in his new house due to SNL commitments, but looks forward to finally doing so.
Larry Dean: Hellbent runs at Pleasance Courtyard, Edinburgh, from 5-30 August, followed by a UK and Ireland tour until 3 December.
