Kylie Minogue Opens Up About Heartbreak Over Michael Hutchence
Kylie Minogue on Michael Hutchence Heartbreak

Kylie Minogue has shared how her breakup from late singer Michael Hutchence left her heartbroken and seeking a similar love ever since. The Australian singer discusses her romance with the INXS frontman in an upcoming Netflix documentary about her life, called Kylie, admitting that it left an indelible mark on her life.

Heartbreak and Lasting Impact

'He was the first in so many ways. And one of those firsts was heartbreak. I was devastated,' the 57-year-old said in the docuseries. The Melbourne-born pop star and the Aussie rocker dated from 1989 to 1991, with both going on to have high profile relationships with other stars.

Michael had headline-grabbing romances with supermodel Helena Christensen and British TV star Paula Yates, while Kylie dated actor Olivier Martinez and was at one stage engaged to English actor Joshua Sasse. Kylie was last linked to Paul Solomons, the creative director of British GQ, with the pair splitting in 2023 after five years together.

Seeking Unreplicable Magic

Kylie confesses that she has not managed to replicate the magic that she and Hutchence once shared. 'You go on and live your lives, but it was definitely an amazing point in time and I've probably been looking for something like that ever since and I haven't got it,' Kylie said.

The couple were torn apart by distance, with Michael's rock star lifestyle getting in the way of their union. 'He was a rock star, which doesn't just mean that he needs many women in his life, but he needed to go where he needed to go,' Kylie said. 'But I know from people in his circle that he talked of me and thought of me. We were good together.'

'But it was an amazing time. The memories make me feel good, even if I'm getting teary. It was good to have someone, to feel like you were a good team. I'm fortunate. The emotion and the memories I have with that time - I just felt protected, nurtured, valued, and believed in.'

Emotional Documentary Revelations

Kylie told Hello! magazine that discussing Michael in the documentary left her emotional, and marked the only time she has broken down on camera. 'That was the first time I cried on camera in the interviews,' she said. 'I knew it was gonna happen and here it comes. I didn't think it would be about that conversation,' Kylie continued. 'But when I really think about him and talk about him, I can often just feel his presence and think about that time.'

'In the conversations about Michael, I was really trying to put myself back in the moment, so I would become more emotional, which was interesting. I think it was good. I think maybe it's just something that people can relate to.'

Documentary Details

The iconic singer will be providing fans with some never-before-heard stories about her two-year relationship with the late singer, who died in 1997 at age 37, in the documentary, which begins streaming on Netflix on May 20. 'I was 21 when we met - and really impressionable... I mean that in the best possible way,' Kylie said. 'He just had such an impact on me. He was a smart, kind, deep, artistic and interesting human.'
