Kylie Minogue Fights Tears Reading Heartbreaking Letter to Future Child

Kylie Minogue became emotional as she read a letter she had written to her future child during her IVF treatment while battling breast cancer. The pop superstar, 57, revealed that in 2005, alongside her cancer treatment, she underwent numerous rounds of IVF in hopes of becoming a mother.

In a poignant moment from the new Netflix documentary Kylie, which chronicles her journey from Neighbours star to the highest-selling female Australian artist of all time, Minogue recalled that difficult period. She admitted that having a baby would have been 'just shy of a miracle.' She said: 'If it had happened, it would have been just shy of a miracle but it didn't work out that way. So, this was a letter to what might have been.'

The letter later formed the lyrics of her track Flower, released on her 2012 album The Abbey Road Sessions. Minogue read the letter on camera: 'Distant child, my flower, are you blowing in the breeze? Can you feel me as I breathe life into you? Wrapped in a blanket of hope, asleep in a bed of dreams, my step into eternity is not what it might have been, or not at all, for who knows which way the wind is going to blow.'

Minogue admitted she still wonders what motherhood would have been like. She said: 'One can't help but wonder what it would have been like and I am so close to my family, it just wasn't my path so that was what I was writing about. Even if you didn't come to be, you're somewhere, we all become something even if it's ash and we become something else. So I was kind of hopeful and realistic at the same time.'

The Spinning Around singer candidly shared that she tried a few times 'with such a thread of hope' and felt she 'couldn't not try' to become a mother. She added: 'I was 36 when I got my diagnosis so already it's – you need to be thinking about children. So I did try, I even postponed my chemotherapy to try, which was quite scary at the time because you just want it out, gone.'

Minogue's sister Dannii, 54, mother to 15-year-old Ethan, expressed her heartbreak: 'I never saw myself being a parent and she [Kylie] always did and that is just heartbreaking.'

Elsewhere in the documentary, Minogue revealed she secretly battled breast cancer for a second time in 2021 but chose to share it now. She said: 'Thankfully I got through it again and all is well. Making this documentary has meant looking back at so many pivotal moments in my life and this was another one. I also know there will be someone out there who will benefit from a gentle reminder to do their check-ups.'
