Kris Marshall, the star of the popular BBC series Beyond Paradise, has openly admitted to frequently finding himself in hot water with the show's producers. The actor, who reprises his role as Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman in the fourth series premiering tonight, March 27, on BBC One, disclosed that he often receives what he describes as "dressing-downs" behind closed doors.
Accidental Spoilers Lead to Reprimands
During a recent appearance on the TV Reload podcast, Marshall explained that his tendency to drop spoilers during media interviews has repeatedly landed him in trouble. "I get into trouble about it all the time, honestly," he confessed. "I've had so many dressings down behind closed doors with the amount of spoilers I'm dropping. I need more media training or something." This revelation came ahead of the release of the third series last year, highlighting ongoing issues with maintaining secrecy around plot details.
Return to the Role and On-Screen Romance
Marshall, aged 52, first took on the role of DI Humphrey Goodman in Death in Paradise, succeeding Ben Miller as the lead detective. He later reprised the character for Beyond Paradise in 2023, a spin-off that has since gained a dedicated following. The new series continues to explore his character's pursuit of on-screen love interest Martha, played by Sally Bretton, adding emotional depth to the crime drama.
Filming Schedule and Family Life
Despite the challenges, Marshall appreciates the filming schedule for Beyond Paradise, which is shot in Devon and Cornwall. Unlike his previous work on Death in Paradise, filmed on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, the UK-based production allows him to see his family more frequently. He manages to return home every other weekend, as filming runs from Monday to Friday. "Actually, I love it," he told the Mirror. "I get the beauty of seeing my family every other weekend, but then I also get the solitude I enjoy at the end of a really hard working week."
Connection to the Coastal Environment
Marshall has a deep personal connection to the filming locations, having spent much of his youth living and surfing in Devon and Cornwall. He rents the same place annually in a village near the set, enjoying a non-touristy beach with a surf break. This environment plays a crucial role in his mental health, especially given the demanding filming schedule. "I am and always have been a really big water person," he explained to Principle Magazine. "Every morning before work, I'm in the sea. I'm in the sea after work. I go hiking up on the Moors."
Mental Health Benefits of Outdoor Activities
The actor emphasized the importance of the great outdoors for maintaining mental stability during grueling shoots. Beyond Paradise involves 70-hour workweeks over 23 consecutive weeks, making it a physically and mentally taxing endeavor. Marshall believes that his time by the coast, which he calls "vitamin sea," helps him cope with these pressures. He also acknowledged the socio-economic challenges in the region, noting "huge pockets of deprivation" left by the decline of mining and fisheries, adding a layer of realism to his appreciation of the area.
Overall, Kris Marshall's candid revelations shed light on the behind-the-scenes dynamics of television production, his personal struggles with media interactions, and the balancing act between a demanding career and family life, all set against the picturesque backdrop of the British coastline.
