Love Story Finale Revisits JFK Jr.'s Tragic Plane Crash with Dramatic Depiction
The concluding episode of Ryan Murphy's latest FX drama series, Love Story, aired on Thursday night, bringing the devastating 1999 deaths of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette back into public consciousness. The show meticulously portrays the couple's whirlwind romance and the fatal journey that ended their lives, drawing from official reports while acknowledging fictionalised elements for dramatic effect.
Dramatised Flight Sequence and Official Crash Factors
In the finale, Kennedy, portrayed by Paul Anthony Kelly, receives a weather briefing before piloting a small aircraft from New Jersey to Martha's Vineyard. Carolyn Bessette, played by Sarah Pidgeon, joins him in the cockpit mid-flight, exchanging tender dialogue before the screen fades to black with faint ocean sounds, symbolising the crash into the Atlantic Ocean. The series notes it is "inspired by actual events" but includes dramatised scenes for storytelling purposes.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board report, several critical conditions contributed to the accident. Darkness and light haze obscured the visual horizon over the water, complicating navigation. Kennedy's relative inexperience was also a significant factor; he had logged over 300 hours of flying time, but only about 55 were at night, and merely nine were in the Saratoga plane he operated that evening. Investigators highlighted "spatial disorientation" caused by poor weather, which can trick a pilot's inner ear into misjudging orientation, leading to fatal corrections.
Family Backlash and Murphy's Response
The nine-episode limited series has faced substantial criticism from surviving family members, particularly Kennedy's nephew, Jack Schlossberg. He previously accused Murphy of "profiting off of" the family's tragedy "in a grotesque way." In response, Murphy told Variety that he plans to donate the show's proceeds to the John F. Kennedy Library, as Schlossberg suggested. Murphy added, "I think it would be really hard if your relatives are always in the media," while also praising Schlossberg's social media content.
Love Story marks the first major scripted series to depict Kennedy and Bessette's ill-fated love story, blending historical facts with creative liberties to explore their legacy and the enduring impact of their deaths.
