In a significant career pivot, Jenna Bush Hager is stepping into the world of scripted television for the first time. The beloved Today show personality, 44, has been announced as an executive producer for an upcoming NBC drama pilot titled Protection.
A New Chapter in Television
The project was officially confirmed on Tuesday, marking a major first for Bush Hager in her broadcasting career. The drama comes from Josh Safran, the showrunner behind the recent Gossip Girl reboot, and explores a dark conspiracy within a family of law enforcement agents.
The series synopsis sets up a gripping premise: "When a U.S. Marshal falls in the line of duty, a seemingly cut-and-dry case turns into a deadly conspiracy as a family of law enforcement agents become the target of a mysterious assassin." It continues, detailing how the Thornhill family must bridge personal divides and cross professional boundaries, using their expertise to protect each other and bring a killer to justice—"even if it means betraying their sworn code."
The Production Deal Behind the Project
This venture is part of a first-look deal between NBC's Universal Studio Group and Bush Hager's own production company, Thousand Voices, which she launched last year. The company describes itself as a media firm and global community "driven by the power of story and connection."
Bush Hager has been vocal about the company's mission. "We believe in the power of storytelling to bring us together and to show us all different perspectives," she stated in a video on the company's Instagram. "It has the true power of empathy in film, television and publishing."
Protection represents the second pilot order from NBC this year, following a planned reboot of the classic series The Rockford Files.
Celebration and a New Today Show Era
Bush Hager celebrated the news enthusiastically on her Instagram, sharing a screenshot of a trade report with the caption "What a day!!!" accompanied by a heart-eyes emoji. Josh Safran also expressed surprise on his Instagram Story, writing, "This was as much a surprise to me as it is to you!"
This new executive role coincides with a refreshed chapter in her day job. A longstanding member of the Today show team since 2009, Bush Hager has co-hosted the programme's fourth hour since 2019. Following Hoda Kotb's departure in January 2025, this Monday ushered in Today with Jenna & Sheinelle, which she now hosts alongside Sheinelle Jones.
Beyond television, Bush Hager is also a literary force. She founded the popular book club #ReadWithJenna in March 2019 and last January announced her own publishing imprint through Thousand Voices in partnership with the Random House Publishing Group, with a mission to discover emerging talent from across the globe.
